High-visibility clothing should always be worn when a person’s visibility needs to be significantly increased – particularly when working on roads, railways or within industrial sites, where the risk of being overlooked is a concern both day and night.
Typical areas of use for high-visibility clothing:
- Road construction and municipal services (e.g. municipal utilities, refuse collection)
- Freight forwarders, logistics, loading bays
- Airfields, rail transport, industrial and factory premises
Standards and risk levels:
High-visibility clothing in accordance with EN ISO 20471:
- for people as passive road users in the vicinity of carriageways, tracks or traffic areas
- for example, when working on or near the carriageway whilst vehicles are passing nearby
- High-visibility clothing in accordance with EN 17353:
- for active road users (e.g. pedestrians, cyclists) up to 60 km/h
- for activities where high-visibility clothing is not strictly mandatory, but improved visibility is advisable (e.g. logistics, security, marshalling duties, work in areas close to traffic)
Check with your employer or employers’ liability insurance association whether high-visibility clothing in accordance with EN ISO 20471 or high-visibility clothing in accordance with EN 17353 is required.
